On 22 July 2008 the Department of Health launched a consultation for a renewed alcohol strategy entitled 'Safe, Sensible, Social'. Following a series of reviews, the paper notes the government's belief that the current voluntary code should be revised as it is being inconsistently applied across the industry.
The Government is therefore consulting on more robust provisions to regulate not only labelling, but also drinks promotions and 'happy hours' to encourage more sensible drinking. Clear labelling on alcoholic beverages and a review of promotions are just some of the tactics under consultation. The paper also questions what more the NHS can do to educate on the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption.
